You manage DNS records in the DNS Records card on the domain page. They take effect while the domain uses OrbitFour DNS, or a Cloudflare zone you've connected.
Add or edit a record
- Open the domain from My Domains.
- In DNS Records, select Add Record, or Edit on an existing row.
- Choose the Type, then enter the Name and Value.
- Set the TTL (seconds). The default is 3600, which is one hour.
- Select Create or Update.
For the name, use @ for the root domain, a subdomain such as www, or * for a wildcard. Names starting with an underscore, such as _dmarc, work too.
On OrbitFour DNS, the switch in the Status column turns a record off without deleting it. Delete removes it.
Record types
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| A | Points a name to an IPv4 address |
| AAAA | Points a name to an IPv6 address |
| ALIAS | Points the root domain (@) to another hostname |
| CNAME | Points a subdomain to another hostname |
| MX | Names your mail servers, with a priority |
| TXT | Holds text, such as SPF or verification codes |
| NS | Specifies nameservers |
| SRV | Defines a service, written as priority weight port target |
| CAA | Names the certificate authorities allowed to issue certificates, written as flags tag value |
| WR | Redirects visitors to another URL |
ALIAS or CNAME at the root
A CNAME can't be used on the root domain (@). To point the root at a hostname, use ALIAS instead. CNAME is for subdomains such as www.
Protected NS records
NS records show as Always on and Protected. You can't edit, disable or delete them here. To change where your DNS is hosted, see Changing nameservers.
URL forwarding
A WR record redirects visitors to another web address. The value must start with http:// or https://. Under Redirect Type, choose 301 - Permanent or 302 - Temporary.
DNS hosted elsewhere
If the domain uses another provider's nameservers, the card shows the records we can see in public DNS, read-only. Make changes at that provider, or select Move DNS to OrbitFour.
If that provider is Cloudflare, select Connect Cloudflare token to manage. Paste an API token made with Cloudflare's Edit zone DNS template, scoped to this domain's zone. Edits here then sync to Cloudflare. Disconnect stops that, and your records stay in Cloudflare.
Export your zone
Export zone file downloads your records as a standard zone file, for example to move providers. ALIAS and WR records appear as notes to recreate by hand.
Permissions
Team members need the Edit DNS permission to change records. Anyone on the account can export.
