Domain lock vs. the 60-day transfer lock

The lock you control and the ICANN 60-day restriction you can't, and why a transfer may be blocked.

Two different locks can stop a transfer. The transfer lock is a setting you turn on and off. The 60-day lock is an ICANN rule that no one can remove.

The transfer lock

The transfer lock stops anyone from moving your domain to another registrar. It's in the Transfer card on the domain page, shown as Locked or Unlocked.

We turn it on when you register a domain with us or transfer one in. Keep it on unless you're moving the domain away.

  • To unlock, select Unlock Domain and confirm. It takes effect immediately.
  • To lock again, select Lock Domain.

To change several domains at once, select them on My Domains and use Lock.

The 60-day lock

ICANN doesn't allow a domain to move to another registrar within 60 days of its registration or its last transfer. We can't lift it, and neither can any other registrar.

While it applies, the Transfer card counts down the days until the domain is eligible for transfer.

You can still unlock the domain and get its authorization code during those 60 days. The transfer itself won't go through until the countdown ends.

Why New Code is disabled

New Code replaces your authorization code. It's disabled while the domain is locked or inside the 60-day lock, and it's refused while a transfer is pending.

Get Auth Code only needs the domain to be unlocked.

The protective lock after an ICANN bulk transfer

If your domain came to us in an ICANN bulk transfer, a protective lock holds it for 60 days to guard against theft. The Transfer card shows the date it ends, and Unlock Domain stays disabled until then.

To transfer sooner:

  1. Select Release lock and confirm.
  2. Select Unlock Domain.

Releasing the protective lock doesn't unlock the domain by itself. If the domain or account has been flagged for abuse, we need to verify your identity first, so contact support.

Moving between OrbitFour accounts

Neither lock applies when you move a domain to another OrbitFour account. Use the Internal Transfer card on the domain page.

Who can change locks

Unlocking, releasing the protective lock, and getting or replacing the code need the Transfer Out permission.
