To move a domain to another registrar, unlock it, copy its authorization code, and give the code to your new registrar.
Steps
- Open the domain from My Domains and find the Transfer card.
- Select Unlock Domain, then confirm. The change takes effect immediately.
- Select Get Auth Code. The code appears with a Copy button.
- Start the transfer at your new registrar and paste the code there.
- Approve the transfer request when we email you, or let it complete on its own.
Keep the code private. Anyone who has it can request your domain.
The transfer request
When the new registrar requests the domain, we email the account owner with Approve transfer and Reject transfer buttons. The domain page also shows Transfer Request Pending, with Approve Transfer and Reject Transfer.
- Approve if you want the transfer to go ahead now. This can't be undone.
- Reject to keep the domain with us.
- Do nothing, and the transfer completes automatically after 5 days.
If you didn't ask for this transfer, reject it and contact support straight away.
Each email button opens a confirmation page before anything happens. If a link has expired, sign in and use the buttons on the domain page instead. We email you again once the domain has moved.
The 60-day rule
ICANN doesn't allow a transfer within 60 days of a registration or a previous transfer. During that time you can still unlock the domain and get its code. The transfer won't go through until the countdown on the Transfer card ends.
Replacing the code
If you shared a code and the transfer didn't happen, select New Code to replace it. The old code stops working immediately.
New Code isn't available while the domain is locked, during the 60-day period, or while a transfer is pending.
If a button is missing or disabled
- Get Auth Code and New Code stay disabled until you unlock the domain.
- If the domain came to us in an ICANN bulk transfer, a protective lock may hold it. Release that first, as described in Domain lock vs. the 60-day transfer lock.
- Team members need the Transfer Out permission to unlock, get the code or answer a transfer request. Ask an account owner to grant it.
